Burned out by high-profile murders and his love life splashed all over Page Six, New York homicide cop Charlie Crawford heads south and signs on with the Palm Beach PD. After months of petty crimes, he's first on the scene to find a man hanging from a banyan tree.
Prime suspects are a hedge-fund billionaire with a thing for young girls, a bartender with a sketchy past, and right smack in the middle of it, Crawford's girlfriend, a beautiful, conniving gallery owner, ready to do whatever it takes to move up a bracket or two.

I thought this was a pretty good book. I liked the writer's style of writing, and the story moved along at a goid pace. Two things kept me from rating it higher. First of all, I did not find Nicole to be a believable character. She just steps right in out of nowhere and everyone accepts her presence without question. (I also did not like the way the ex-wife was written. She was nothing but a screaming bitch. It is impossible to believe that one person could fall in love with her, much less two.) The other problem was with the ending of the book. After all the build-up of how super tough the villain was, it was awfully easy to take him down once the main PI got serious. Still, with the exception of Nicole, I found the main characters likeable, and I would read another book in the series.Product details

Palm Beach Nasty A Charlie Crawford Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Tom Turner Phil Thron Books Reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed this well-plotted, fast paced detective novel set in West Palm Beach, Florida. The author has a real knack for forming well-written characters that populate a believable set of crimes that connect with each other in ways you'll have to read the entire book to understand. I'll read more from this author, for sure.
Charlie Crawford, a NYC police detective transplant, is confronted with two grisly murders in posh Palm Beach, Florida. One, Danny Bill, is the brother of a minor, Misty Bill, who was seduced by a rich pedophile, Ward Jaynes. The second is an employee of the Poinciana Country Club, Cynthia Dexter, who got caught up with the con man, Nick Greenleaf. Haynes is used to getting what he wants and not pleased with anyone who tries to blackmail him for his crimes. Greenleaf poses as the grandson, Avery Robertson, of a super wealthy recluse, Spencer Robertson. Spencer is in his nineties, bedridden and demented. Crawford and his partner, Most Ott, need to figure out who committed these crimes and how to arrest them. Running around Palm Beach scouting leads, Crawford and Ott, come up with a plan to get Jaynes. They get a lead regarding Greenleaf from one of his accomplices, the Robertson's butler, Alcie. Crawford and Ott plan their takedowns and the details are worthy of the detective who brought down a NYC serial killer.
Well - this one kept me 'turning pages' (!)...... some of the scenarios beggar belief --- but it's 'fiction' so plod on...!
There's an element of adding extra input that does little more than increase the word count.
At the end - the author just seemed to want to wrap it all up --- perhaps to get onto another tale... ;-) ?
Still - I enjoyed much of the quirky dialogue and the concurrent 'stories' (I did expect the two story lines to come together, but they never did).
The kind of crime novel that had me engaged from virtually the first chapter! Characters that leapt off the pages, humorous passages such as 'So what if the old guy wished him "Happy New Year" twice a day, wore Depends, and called him Oswald"? and "Link Sought Between Hanging Man and Reclining Nude." not to mention a mystery with enough angles to keep you very busy reading start to finish. Really liked this book and looking forward to reading "Palm Beach Poison" next!
After living for two years in Palm Beach County, it was time to revisit the area. Most
of the places mentioned were new to me, but the flavor lingered. An exciting read with an interesting cast of characters. The antagonists were evil and the protagonists properly heroic and all were well drawn and fascinating. Certainly a series to be read!
It was an interesting story. I don't know what it was about Crawford and the other characters, but I just couldn't get into the characters. They were more than one-dimensional, but by the end of the story I didn't feel I liked them or knew them very well. I'm a short drive from Palm Beach & found some of the descriptions good, but others kind of "out there". Like no murders in Palm Beach?? You are talking Palm Beach, Florida, right? Don't think I want to dive into another Crawford book, especially reading the gratis first part of book 2. I've had enough Donald Trump without finding him in the fiction I'm reading.
Full disclosure I helped Tom Turner as an early reader and editor for PALM BEACH NASTY. I love his work. My taste usually runs toward the darker, more serious end of thrillerdom, but when I read Tom's work, it's like a cool breeze on the beach. The author he reminds me most of is Carl Hiaasen. Not only the Florida setting, but also the crime comedy, which never fails to make me smile stupidly in a crowd while reading. Tom's humor is more class-based (the filthy rich, the poor and desperate, and our hero detective, who falls somewhere in between, having come from a privileged NY family, but having very little worldly wealth himself), whereas Hiaasen has a more political/environmental bent. I highly recommend Tom Turner for those seeking a formidable mystery wrapped in easy-breezy fun.
